Truth or Myth: Does Cardio Kill Your Gains?
You heard cardio eats your muscle. Here's what actually holds up, and where it's just a maybe.
The straight answer
Mostly myth. Cardio does not kill your gains, at least not the way gym legend says. When you run both cardio and lifting side by side, muscle and strength usually hold up, and sometimes go up. Keep your explosive stuff by keeping explosive work
Here's a smart move. If you care about jumping and sprinting, keep a power piece in your lifting. When people did that, their jump and sprint numbers usually held or even improved alongside the cardio. The key word is usually. It's not every time. The one type of cardio that bites back

Timing and order, if you want to fine-tune
Two small levers, both weak evidence, both worth knowing. First, spacing. There's a suggestion that leaving more than three hours between your cardio and your lifting may help dodge the acute signal clash. Advisory, not proven. Second, order. In human trials, the sequence often showed no consistent effect on your final gains in strength, size, or endurance. So order may not matter much for the big picture. That said, if you're chasing explosive power or strength-to-bodyweight, doing strength first may be the friendlier setup. Read that as a lean, not a rule.
Who this looks good for
Well-built combined programs were tied to keeping or improving physical performance across different adult groups, though how much varied by who you are and how the program's set. Adherence was good and problems were rare in what got reviewed. And in postmenopausal women specifically, combined training was linked to small improvements in body composition and modest gains in metabolic health, with subgroup peeks at better blood pressure, blood sugar, triglycerides, and fitness. Small effects. Uncertain how much they matter day to day. But the direction is friendly, not scary.
Cardio killing your gains is mostly a myth. Keep two to three lifting sessions a week, hold onto a bit of explosive work, and your strength and size should ride along fine. The one thing to respect is all-out sprint intervals, which can leave your legs flat for up to two days, so don't stack them right before a big leg session.
