How To Do the Chin-Up
Nobody can do their first one by trying harder. Here is what actually builds the pull, and which of the popular accessory drills earned its place.

The chin-up is a pull-up with your palms facing you. That single change turns your biceps from a helper into a major contributor, which is why most people can do more chin-ups than pull-ups.
That makes it the better entry point to hanging pulls, and a genuinely different exercise rather than an easier version of the same one.
It is also the movement people fail at most publicly, which is why the research below on getting your first one is the most useful thing in this article.
What actually improves your pull-up numbers
This study was built for exactly the problem most people have.
Thirty physically inactive male students, aged around 21, were randomly assigned to three groups of ten. All three performed identical pull-up-based programmes for eight weeks. The only difference was what was bolted on: interval training, forearm-specific training, or core-specific training.
Before and after, participants were tested on maximum pull-up repetitions, grip strength in both hands, and dead-hanging time.
That is a clean design. Same core programme across all three arms, one variable changed, three outcomes measured.
The reasoning behind it is the recognisable problem: pull-ups require coordinated activation of the latissimus dorsi, biceps, forearm flexors and core stabilisers, and many people cannot perform them due to inadequate grip strength or core stability.
Significant improvements were found in all variables, at p at or below 0.001.
All variables, all groups. Everybody who ran a structured pull-up programme for eight weeks got better at pull-ups, got stronger grip, and hung longer.
I am not reporting which supplemental training won, because the between-group comparison is the substance of the paper and is not something to compress from an abstract. The finding you can act on is the one that applies to all three arms: a structured programme built around the movement itself, run consistently for eight weeks, improved every measure in previously inactive people.

The setup
Grip the bar with your palms facing you, hands roughly shoulder width. Wider than that starts moving you toward a pull-up.
Full grip, thumbs around the bar. Get a firm hold before you leave the ground.
Hang from a dead hang with your arms straight. Not fully passive though. Pull your shoulder blades down and slightly back so your shoulders are not up around your ears.
Brace your midsection and squeeze your glutes. Cross your ankles behind you or hold your legs slightly forward. A rigid body is easier to pull than a floppy one.

The movement
Start the pull by depressing your shoulder blades, then pull your elbows down and toward your ribs.
Think about pulling your elbows to your back pockets rather than pulling your chin over the bar. The chin clearing the bar is the result, not the aim.
Keep your chest up and slightly lead with it. Rounding forward turns the pull into a shrug.
Go until your chin clears the bar. Then lower all the way back to straight arms.
Control the descent across two to three seconds. Full range with a controlled lowering is worth more than a longer set of half reps.
No kipping unless you are specifically training that as a skill. A swing moves your bodyweight for you.
Also standard coaching practice, included because a guide that skipped it would be useless.
If you cannot do one yet
Two approaches, both built on what that eight-week study demonstrated: structured, repeated exposure to the movement pattern is what moves the numbers.
Dead hangs, timed. Dead-hanging time was one of the three measures in that study, and it improved significantly. Hang, time it, add seconds.
Eccentric-only chin-ups. Jump or step to the top position and lower yourself as slowly as you can. Three to five reps, several sets.
Band-assisted or machine-assisted chin-ups, reducing the assistance over weeks.
Grip work, since inadequate grip strength is named in that study as one of two common reasons people cannot perform the movement, and grip strength improved significantly across all three groups.
What matters more than which method you pick is that you run it for weeks rather than trying it twice. That study ran eight weeks and improved every measure it took.
The specific progression methods listed here are standard coaching practice, not protocols tested in the study cited.
Grip and implement changes matter less than you would think
There is a comparison of pull-up variations worth knowing before you buy anything.
Fifteen resistance-trained men and women, averaging 25 years old, performed traditional pull-ups, suspension device pull-ups and towel pull-ups in randomised order, three repetitions each, with grip width standardised at 1.5 times the distance between their shoulder points. Normalised electromyographic values, expressed as a percentage of maximum voluntary contraction, were recorded for latissimus dorsi, posterior deltoid, middle trapezius and biceps brachii.
No significant differences existed within the latissimus dorsi, biceps brachii or posterior deltoid between any of the exercises.
Three quite different implements, and the three muscles most people care about showed no significant difference in activation. The middle trapezius did differ between conditions.
The practical read: the bar is fine. Suspension straps and towels are useful for variety and for grip demand, and there is no evidence here that they recruit your lats or biceps more.
Fifteen participants performing three reps per variation in a single session, measuring activation rather than growth, and comparing implements rather than grip orientation. It does not tell you how a chin-up compares to a pull-up.
Is it a beginner exercise
Worth settling, because the chin-up gets prescribed to novices constantly.
A Delphi study used three iterative surveys with expert panels to reach consensus on exercise selection for novices, a gap the authors note is unaddressed even though repetitions, sets, rest and load recommendations are established. In the first survey, 17 experts rated the technical complexity of 77 strength training exercises as low, moderate or high. Exercises with a majority high-complexity vote were removed. In the second survey, experts rated the remainder as appropriate or too advanced for a novice, with 70 percent agreement required. Finally they rated exercises for adults over 60.
Experts agreed that 41 exercises were appropriate for novices, and that 32 were appropriate for novice adults over 60.
That is a real, structured answer to a question usually settled by opinion.
This article does not report which exercises made those lists, since the specific list is the output of the paper. What it establishes is that technical demand is a legitimate filter for exercise selection, and the chin-up's demand is not technical so much as strength-related: the pattern is simple, the requirement is that you can move your own bodyweight.
Expert consensus is a form of structured opinion, not experimental evidence, and this study addressed exercise selection generally rather than the chin-up specifically.
Why any of this is worth your time
The chin-up is the most honest strength test there is. Your bodyweight is the load and it does not negotiate.
What the evidence supports: eight weeks of a structured pull-up-based programme significantly improved maximum repetitions, grip strength and dead-hang time in previously inactive people, across every group tested. Implement changes between bar, straps and towel produced no significant activation difference in lats, biceps or rear delts. And exercise selection by technical demand is a legitimate framework, backed by expert consensus across 77 exercises.
What that leaves you: hands shoulder width and palms toward you, active hang, elbows to your back pockets, full range both ways, controlled descent, and eight weeks of showing up rather than two attempts.
