Do Greens Powders Work?

A scoop of green powder promises to replace the vegetables you did not eat. Somebody tested the famous one properly, and the design tells you as much as the result.

The claim

One scoop covers your fruit and vegetables. Fills the gaps in your diet. Supports your gut.

Greens powders are the most successfully marketed supplement of the last few years, sold hard by podcasts and athletes.

Unusually for this category, the market leader has actually been studied. So let me start there rather than with generalities.

What the trial actually did

A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study examined two weeks of AG1 supplementation on gut microbial composition, nutritional adequacy and tolerability.

Twenty resistance-trained adults took part, 10 men averaging 26.4 years and 10 women averaging 26.9. Each supplemented daily with either AG1 or placebo for 14 days, then after a two-week washout crossed over to the other condition.

Participants gave stool samples for gut microbial analysis, completed a digestion-related quality of life questionnaire, and did 24-hour dietary intake assessments at the start and end of each period. Outcomes were analysed with repeated-measures and multivariate approaches covering dietary intake, gut microbiota, metabolomics and questionnaires.

Credit where it is due. That is a proper design: crossover, so each person is their own control, double-blind, placebo-controlled, with a washout period.

Now the limits, which matter as much as the design. Twenty participants. Fourteen days per condition. Already resistance-trained, health-oriented adults, which is to say people whose diets are probably better than average to begin with.

Two weeks is enough to move gut microbial composition and to record what people ate. It is not enough to show a health outcome, and the study did not claim to.

The category the study describes

The paper's own framing of why these products exist is worth quoting for its neutrality: supplements combining vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, prebiotics and probiotics have gained popularity among health-oriented consumers seeking convenient ways to fill nutritional gaps and support gut health.

Seeking convenient ways to fill nutritional gaps. That is the honest description of the customer, and it points at the real question.

Do you have a gap? Because a product that fills gaps is only useful to someone who has one, and the trial population was resistance-trained health-oriented adults, exactly the people least likely to have large ones.

The thing the powder is replacing

Here is where the claim gets weak on its own terms.

A narrative review on food and cognition synthesised evidence across eight categories of what it calls brain-supportive foods: dairy, eggs, seafood, lean meat, berries, leafy green vegetables, nuts and whole grains. It examined nutrient bioavailability, dietary patterns and the structural and socioeconomic factors affecting access to these foods.

Notice what a vegetable is in that framing. Not a delivery mechanism for a list of micronutrients, but a food with a matrix, fibre, and bioavailability that depends on how it is eaten.

A powder delivers extracted compounds. Whether extracted compounds behave like the food they came from is the entire question, and it is one the greens powder trial did not test, because it measured nutritional adequacy and microbiota rather than comparing powder against actual vegetables.

That comparison, powder versus the vegetables it claims to replace, is the study nobody has run, and its absence is the most important fact in this article.

Why people do not eat vegetables anyway

The interesting finding here is that the gap these products target is real, and mostly not about knowledge.

A nationally representative survey analysed 12,406 people aged 15 and over in Türkiye, one of the world's leading producers of fruit and vegetables. Trained dietitians took measurements across all 81 provinces.

Between 2010 and 2017, fruit and vegetable consumption fell 24.3 percent. In a country producing them in abundance.

The authors call that a discrepancy between agricultural capacity and dietary intake, and used regression to identify what actually drives daily consumption.

So low vegetable intake is not simply a matter of availability or of people not knowing they should. It has structural and behavioural determinants. A powder is a response to that, and whether it addresses it or just monetises it is a fair question.

That survey is cross-sectional data from one country and says nothing about supplements. I include it because it describes the actual problem these products are sold against.

So should you buy one

If you barely eat vegetables, a greens powder is better than the nothing it replaces, and the market leader has at least been tested in a properly designed trial for tolerability and nutritional adequacy over two weeks.

If you eat vegetables regularly, nothing here shows you gain anything, and the trial population was people already reasonably nourished.

What should not persuade you: the claim that it replaces vegetables. No study here compared the powder against the food it claims to substitute for.

And on cost, these are among the most expensive supplements per serving on the market. That is a lot of money for a gap you can also close with frozen vegetables.

The takeaway

The market leader has been through a genuinely well-designed trial: randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled and crossover. But it ran two weeks in 20 already resistance-trained adults, measuring gut microbiota and nutritional adequacy rather than health outcomes, and it never compared the powder against the vegetables it is sold as replacing. That missing comparison is the whole argument. If you barely eat vegetables it beats nothing. If you eat them already, nothing here shows you gain. And the gap these products target is real but structural: fruit and vegetable intake fell 24.3 percent in seven years in a country that grows them in abundance.

Limits of this evidence

  • The AG1 trial ran only 14 days per condition in 20 participants, which is short and small for drawing conclusions about health effects.
  • Participants were resistance-trained, health-oriented adults, the group least likely to have significant nutritional gaps, so findings may not apply to people with poor diets.
  • The trial measured gut microbial composition, nutritional adequacy and tolerability, not health outcomes, disease risk or performance.
  • Critically, no study cited here compared a greens powder against actual fruit and vegetable intake, which is the central marketing claim.
  • The cognition review is narrative rather than systematic and concerns whole foods, not supplements, so it is included to describe what a vegetable is rather than to evaluate powders.
  • The consumption survey is cross-sectional data from a single country and does not address supplements at all.
  • No source here assessed label accuracy, ingredient doses, or value for money in greens powder products.
